Mental health is a broad topic that describes how we feel, what we think, memory and behaviour. One in four people in the UK have a mental health problem at some point in their lives, which affects their daily life, relationships or physical health.
There are many different types of Mental health disorders that affect people in different ways. Schizophrenia, depression and personality disorders are all examples of mental health problems. Diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia generally develop in old age, whereas eating disorders are more common in young people. This page will hopefully help as a guide to help you find useful resources locally if you think you may need some help with your mental health.
The Samaritans offer emotional support 24 hours a day – in full confidence.

Anxiety and Depression
Depression is a a general feeling of low mood that can last for a long time and negatively affect everyday life.
We all feel low from time to time, having some good and some bad days. Depression in its mildest form means generally being in low spirits most of the time. When mild you can continue to lead your normal life but everything becomes more difficult to do and there is little enjoyment in life and few things feel worthwhile. At its most severe, depression can be life-threatening because it can make you feel suicidal.
Anxiety is what we feel when we are worried, tense or afraid – particularly about things that are about to happen, or which we think could happen in the future.
Anxiety is a natural human response when we feel that we are under threat. It can be experienced through our thoughts, feelings and physical sensations.
If you’ve noticed changes in the way you are thinking or feeling over the past few weeks or months that concern you and cause you distress, you should consider making an appointment to see your GP.
