Flu is more likely to be serious if you have a long term health condition, are pregnant, or are older. The people at high risk of COVID-19 are generally the same people at increased risk of becoming very ill with flu.
Flu can also be serious for young children.
Lat year in Wales more than a million people got their flu vaccines, that’s around one in every three people.
If any of the following apply to you , even if you feel healthy, you are more likely to get complications from flu if you catch it and you are advised to have a flu & COVID vaccine.
- You are Pregnant
- You are aged 65 or over (AGE 65 years by 31 March 2026, born before 1 April 1961)
- you are aged six months to 64 years old in a clinical risk group including (COPD, Chronic Heart Disease, CKD stage 3, 4 or 5, Chronic Liver Disease, Chronic Neurological Disease such as Parkinson’s or Motor Neuron Disease, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Immunosuppression, BMI over 40
- You live in a care home
The following groups are also advised to have a flu vaccine to protect them and the people around them.
- Children aged two or three years old (age on the 31st August 2025) i.e date of birth on or after 1 September 2021 and on or before 31 August 2023.
- Children in Primary school reception class and school years 1 – 6
- Children and young people in school years 7 to year 11
- Carers
- People with learning disabilities
- People working directly with patients/clients in health or social care
- Healthcare workers (including healthcare students) with direct patient contact
